Ohio State Recruit Jamel Turner Shot, Girlfriend Killed

Ohio State football recruit Jamel Turner was shot Friday night while riding passenger in a car driven by a man who had done prison time for drug and gun crimes.

Turner was treated in the emergency room of a Youngstown, Ohio hospital after taking gunshots to the left ankle and right hip. The extent of Turner's injuries are not known.

An spokesperson for Ohio State University said that Youngstown police are still gathering information about the incident, though it is reasonable to assume that Turner's future as a Buckeye is uncertain.

Turner, 18, is a 6' 3", 210 defensive end and linebacker who gave an oral commitment in December of 2008, becoming the first recruit of the 2010 class. He signed a national letter of intent in February, while ranked as the No. 11 prospect in the state of Ohio. However, his path to Ohio State has not been an easy one.

He was kicked off the basketball team at Youngstown Ursuline his junior year, and was ruled academically ineligible for all sports. He started his senior year at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia and played football there, but left the school in March.

At the start of spring practices, Ohio State Head Coach Jim Tressel said that he had not spoken to turner, but believed that he returned to Youngstown to earn his high school degree. However, Turner had not returned to Ursuline.

Police searched the black Chevy Blazer that Turner and his twin, Jamal, were riding in during the shooting and found two handguns and two baggies containing what the police believe was marijuana. The police report said those items, for now, are listed as belonging to the driver, 32-year-old Ramses Terry.

Terry and the Turner brothers said their vehicle was exiting the highway on Friday night when a car pulled alongside them and opened fire. Police investigated the area where the victims said it took place but did not find any evidence connected to a shooting. As of Monday night no arrests had been made.
